"It's nice to meet you," Brent said; he added with a grin, "I heard all about the fight you were in. It sounded pretty epic. You manipulate electricity, right?"

"I can turn invisible, and I heal." Brent replied. "What else do you do?" He asked.
He found comfort in openly talking about his powers; he has never been able to do that back home. It was really nice to go to a school full of people who related to his situation.

"Oh, very cool," Penny said. "Those are both very helpful. I can create force fields and teleport," she explained to Brent.

It was the last night of summer, and there was no better way to celebrate than roasting hot dogs over a fire. Lyra sat next to Tobias, holding a skewer over the fire. "Here's to summer," Lyra said, looking over at TK. She let out a small sigh. "Our final year of high school..."

"To summer," Tobias repeated, smiling at Lyra. He spun his hot dog slowly over the fire. "Yeah, high school," he mumbled. The heat and smoke from the fire made Tobias squint.

Lyra stared at the fire then blinked, feeling her eyes burn. She shook her head. "Four years have gone by," Lyra pulled her food out of the fire and blew on it and took a bite. It was perfect. "After this, who knows what..."

"It'll all work out," Tobias reassured Lyra. He retrieved his hot dog from the fire and inspected it. Taking a small bite, Tobias smiled. "I love hot dogs," he chuckled.

"I like hot dogs with you," Lyra replied, putting the hot dog back in the fire. " I enjoy roasting hot dogs more than marshmallows," Lyra said, letting the food burn before finishing her hot dog. "You signed up for same classes same time, right? I don't remember if you are taking a math this year... maybe I should take a math, and get rid of my study hall and take trig or calc. Can't look lazy to universities."

Tobias quietly listened to Lyra and ate his hot dog. Truth be told, she had a very unique voice. Her words gently floated over the air like feathers from some majestic bird. Wait, did that simile even make sense?
"I just have the normal class stuff," Tobias responded dully. His own voice made the words seem harsh and unpleasant. Must be something about girl voices, Tobias decided.
Tobias grabbed another hot dog and began to roast it.

"...wait can we get into college with our school?" Lyra asked Tobias. She forgot what the power classes appeared as on transcripts. Ugh college. Would her parents support her with performing arts? "I hope I can make it in performing," Lyra said to Tobias, following Tobias in making another hot dog.

Again, her voice... It was something about Lyra that Tobias had always loved. He smiled to himself as she spoke. "I think we can get into college, but you should ask one of the Headmistresses to find out how it works," Tobias told Lyra. He glanced over to look at her.
The light from the flames danced across her pristine skin. The fire sparkled in her eyes. Tobias looked away, his face feeling warm. He couldn't decide if it was from the fire or something else.
"You'll definitely make it in the performing arts," Tobias responded to Lyra. He spun his hot dog and tried not to think about school starting.

"Because like... using my powers in the world, I don't want to do that!" Lyra put the stick in the ground so she didn't have to hold it. Too bad it slid over and the hot dog landed on the firewood. She sighed. A waste of a hot dog. Maybe she'd take TK's. "I have to do auditions for scholarships," Lyra said. She looked over at Tobias, "we don't get offers here, no word of scholarship opportunities," she paid attention to the ground. Her shadow danced with the flames... Tobias had nothing. A small frown on her face. "Do you know your plan?" her eyes went back to meet his.

"I don't think I could ever use my powers in the real world," Tobias sullenly replied. "Maybe as a magician." He watched Lyra's hot dog fall over. Tobias shook his head disapprovingly.
"You'll ace every audition, Lyra. You're the best singer I know," he told her confidently. Perhaps his confidence could give her some of her own. Tobias's eyes followed Lyra's and he gazed at her shadow, transfixed, for what felt like an eternity, but couldn't have been more than a few seconds. Numbly, Tobias pulled out the brown pouch with his shadow-vial using his free hand.
"I don't have a plan," Tobias said pulling his hot dog out of the fire and offering it to Lyra.

"Thank you TK," Lyra smiled at Tobias. He was sweet. She wasn't going to tell him that he doesn't know what produces or recruiters want. But if it was any opinion that mattered to her, it was TK's. The hot dog was offered to her, but she took it as taking a bite. And a bite for Lyra meant eating half of it, which Lyra did. She nearly chomped half of it off. "Thank you," she said with her mouth full.
"You should at least go to college," Lyra said, "and have that go for you," her hand brushed against the sand and she tossed some into the fire, leaving some powder from the sand hit her eyes. "Crap!" Lyra shut her eyes, "it burns!"
