"Is it? I wouldn't know. Artemis was talking about it so I felt rushed and wanted to ask before anyone else asked. I regret it now though," Tobias explained to Lyra. He looked up at the sky.

Melrose gave the biggest yawn she probably has ever given in her whole life. She was without a doubt exhausted. Super zooming about campus was completely out of the question, so prefect rounds were going to be slow tonight. But hey, it's Friday, she believed everyone deserved a break on the rule cracking.
As she shuffled over to the fountain, rolling her head around and trying to stretch out the tendons in her neck, Melrose couldn't help to notice her roommate and none other than her famous best friend, Tobias. It'd been a while since she spoke to either of them. Melrose couldn't help but wonder about Tobias, but he was obviously busy racking up every girls' lips on campus, not to mention a guy or two. Or at least, so Melrose had heard.
But it's cool.
She hustled her way over to the two, smiling brightly. "Hey you two! Haven't seen your faces in a while!" Melrose greeted cheerfully, trying to lighten the mood.

"Melly!" Lyra directed to Melrose, her back straight when she saw her. "Making rounds?" Lyra asked Mel. She hopped Mel would give them a break. Let them slide... I mean come on, they were seniors, it was a Friday. Lyra was Mel's roommate and TK was... well, TK. "We aren't in trouble are we?" Lyra asked Mel and grinned cheesily. She hoped that Mel wouldn't crack down on them. She didn't seem angry or mean, unless she played the bad cop role? Whatever that meant. "Oh hey! Nominate Tobias and I for king and queen?" Lyra asked Mel, her eyes lighting up, her grin genuine. Lyra did not discuss this planning with Tobias. It came to her just now. "I'll nominate you for Princess!"

Tobias turned to look at Melrose. He hadn't noticed her arrival. "Hey, Melrose. Are you okay? You left in quite a hurry last time we all saw one another."

Melrose gave a light, reassuring laugh. "Don't worry, you guys are cool. I'm not cracking down tonight. I could care less, really." She assured, grabbing a seat next to Tobias. Wait. King and Queen? Oh shoot! Geez, Homecoming! That was soon too! Tobias and Lyra as King and Queen? Approved. "I would totaly nominate you two! Of course. I hadn't thought to run for Princess, but I might just have to take you up on the offer!"
Melrose turned her attention to Tobias's question, remembering she had never explained the bowling incident. Whoops. She decided to play it light. No one needs a sad story on Friday night. "Oh, it was fine in the end. My cousin got into an accident. He's okay though, so no worries." Melrose grinned as she involuntarily rubbed her knuckles, feeling the stitches. The nurse had yet to take them out.

Tobias nodded at Melrose and smiled. "I'm glad you're okay," he replied to her. Tobias didn't want to talk about Homecoming so he chose not to comment on that subject.
Normally, Tobias would be very much interested in Melrose, but after the night's events, he wasn't in the mood for soul searching.

Lyra was glad to hear that her cousin was okay and there was no more bad news. She remembered the broken glass in their dorm room. Luckily that was fixed. Tobias did not react to homecoming king. Maybe he really wasn't in the mood for that, despite her announcement of running with him. Did he even want to?
"How was your first week of school, Mel?" Lyra asked Melrose. Yeah! Talk about school, where you go to. It's your life now, Lyra. You are trapped in Oceanside for the rest of the year. Poor TK. He was 18 and couldn't even get out.

"Pretty great, actually! Their theatre program is... geez, top notch. I wish I could've enrolled when I was a freshman. Oceanside is a pretty rad place, I have to admit." Melrose leaned back on her hands and reminisced about the past week. It was indeed a good week. Both academically, not to mention socially. Yeaaaah.
"How about you two? Anything special going on? Going to Tari's party tomorrow night?" She leaned forward, interested in what her two friends had to say. Though the tone of Tobias's voice drew Melrose in. She couldn't help but worry. It was a natural instinct of hers to be supporting of friends. It just was one of her things, you know? Though, she worried it was too nosy to ask if he was alright. More than likely, Lyra and he had discussed it.

"I can't make it to her party," Tobias told Melrose. "Busy with stuff tomorrow." Tobias wasn't lying, but more importantly, he didn't want to see Tari.
Tobias sighed and looked at the fountain. The water softly gurgled, creating soothing background noise.

"Oh. That's too bad. I'll, um. I'll let you know how it fans out." Melrose rocked back and forth in her seat, trying to keep it as light of conversation as possible. Though Tobias's sudden depression was like the white elephant in the room. Melrose would look like an idiot if she didn't say something. It wouldn't be as though she'd asking for his life story, just to establish she has noticed something wrong in the current flow of things.
Melrose bit her lower lip, mapping out the right words. "Are you alright, Tobias?" Oh, wow. Original.

Tobias moved to face Melrose. "I... For the most part I'm fine," he started. Tobias didn't see the harm in telling Melrose the truth. "I asked Tari to homecoming tonight and she turned me down," he admitted.

"I'm going to Tari's party tomorrow. Ethan and I are going together," Lyra said nonchalantly. It wasn't a date, was it? She never cleared it up. Although she did need to ask what color he was planning to wear so she could kind of match.
Tobias' tone changed. Oh yeah. Tari. Why would Tobias even go to her party tomorrow? She broke his heart. Lyra took a small breath, trying to contain herself to not go insane and kill Tari for doing that to Tobias. Anyone who made him sad deserved to die... or was that to harsh?
Mel asked if Tobias was okay. That saved Lyra breath, although she was equally, maybe more concerned. She looked away when Tobias explained. Ugh stupid Tobias! Why didn't he tell her! Lyra could have- no, she shouldn't of advise him what to do. Tobias needed to make his own decisions. She just didn't want him getting hurt. Tari was a party girl, did Tobias even like that? Lyra frowned, crossing her arms and she shook her head. "Bitch," she muttered. Not Mel, not Mel at all.

Melrose's face dropped. "Pal. Geez. That's rough. I'm really sorry." She wasn't sure how to go about it, since Tari was still a good friend of hers. However Tobias was just the same. Though Melrose knew what it was like to be totally turned down. And not only that, but to be turned down in front of the whole school. It was a little story called "Freshman Year" back in New York.
Melrose rubbed Tobias's arm, trying to remedy the pain. "Don't worry about it, pal. Everything happens for a reason. I know it's hard to see that now, but I know you will." She smiled reassuringly, "You know during my freshman year back in New York, I asked the homecoming king to Sadies over the intercom during the morning school announcements. I even wrote him a poem too. It rhymed." Melrose laughed at how silly and twitter-patted she was back then, "But he turned me down. On the intercom. In front of everyone."
It kind of hurt to bring it up. It was a terrible moment in Melrose's life. But what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. And she knew Tobias would become stronger.
"So, don't worry, pal. You're not alone. I'm sure there are tons of girls out there that would die to go to homecoming with you. I don't doubt it for a minute." She tapped him on the nose, feeling almost like his fairy godmother. Melrose grinned again, hoping to spark confidence in Tobias once more.
"Well, I suppose I'll take my leave now. I've got to finish my rounds." She stood up from her seat, brushing any wrinkles out of her shirt. "I'll catch you two later okay? Feel better, Tobias. And Lyra, I'll get to work on that nomination!" Melrose stuck her finger up in the air in high promise. She laughed it off and started to back away, "Night you guys."
Melrose strolled off to continue her night tasks, wishing she could have stayed longer to chat. But she had a job to do and besides, Tobias and Lyra had each other. They were going to be just fine.

Tobias listened intently to Melrose and felt a pang of sadness for her once she finished her story. He nodded at her and gave Mel a small grin. "I'll be okay," he told her. "Thank you Melrose."

After Melrose left (Lyra was quite impressed with how she spoke to Tobias. It was sweet) Lyra looked back to Tobias. "What are you doing tomorrow?" Lyra asked. She knew he wasn't lying. At least he didn't have to regret missing the party. Lyra had to refrain herself from punching Tari or screaming loud enough till her ears bleed.
