Ethan walked into the busy bowling alley. A retro place that seemed to never change, even with a few renovations here and there. Even on weeknights, people still liked to bowl the night away. The sounds of bowling balls crashing against the pins and their fall resonated throughout the facility.

Lyra put in her ear plugs. The bowling alley wasn't loud, just the pins striking constantly and the echoes made her ears ring. Ethan and Lyra went up to the front desk and got their shoes and lane number. "We'll just have them add Tobias and Mel if they come," Lyra said as she held her shoes in her hand while they walked to their lane. She sat down and put on her socks and bowling shoes. "You aren't a professional bowler, are you?"

Ethan struck a dramatic, braggart pose and exclaimed haughtily, "Why... I am the BEST bowler you will have ever met, my dear Lyra!" He tried to continue on but doubled over laughing. Ethan went and picked up a bowling ball, dropping it onto the machine that spits them back out.
"No, I'm not; I'm pretty average to above average, depends." he answered smiling, "So, you wanna go up first or shall I do the honors?"

"I will allow you to do the honors," Lyra said. She started to punch in the names on the screen- surprisingly this retro bowling alley had the computer scores. Lyra tapped her chin... something creative... something creative. Nothing. Lyra called Ethan 'Chess' and Lyra 'Checkers' for some obscure reason. "Your turn, Chess," Lyra said and she went over to get a purple 9lb ball and put it on the machine thingie.

Ethan got up to the lane and shimmied his butt in a silly manner. He aimed and took a slow, running start swinging the ball back and then forward. It landed with a clunk and spiraled down the lane.
"PLEASE GIVE ME A STRIKE!" he bellowed as he fell to his knees dramatically.
The ball sped towards the end of the lane; Ethan hoped that maybe willpower would make it hit all the pins. CRASH! His score showed up on the screen. ZERO. He contorted his face awkwardly and sighed, "I'm just the best bowler, aren't I?" He laughed as he waited for the ball to be spat out by the machine.

The machine finally returned Ethan's sparkly, red ball back. He positioned himself once more and aimed a bit more carefully this time.
CRASH! He just turned away after throwing it, thinking it would result in another gutterball. Expecting another zero, Ethan looked up to the scoreboard only to be proven wrong, but someone disappointed still.
"Nine?!" He said in exasperation, "This is going to be a longgg game." He knew it, but he laughed and smiled anyway. "It seems that it's your turn," bowing dramatically and motioning his arms towards the lane, "Miss Lyra." Man, he was just full of dramatics today, wasn't he? Ethan stood up again and took a seat, awaiting his next turn.

Lyra laughed out loud when Ethan fell to the ground, begging the bowling gods for a strike. "I think you need to bribe them better!" she said, laughing at his score. The poor guy, maybe they needed bumpers for him. Ethan went again, getting a 9. "Yay Ethan!" Lyra clapped. A nine was better than another gutter. "Alright, my turn, watch and be amazing," Lyra picked up the bowling ball. Maybe her middle school years of bowling helped, her dad taught her some tricks. Lyra positioned her self and focused on the second arrow towards the left. She walked three steps, her arm with the ball behind her and she let go, the ball rolling to the ground. It hit eight pins. Lyra jumped up in the air, "yatta!" she cheered and waited for her ball to come again, this time getting a spare. She did a white-girl dance.

Left foot. Right foot. Left foot. Right foot. Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out. 123, 123, 123, 123.
Melrose gulped opening the door to the Bowling Alley. With the gorgeous Tobias following her. Geez. She hadn't known he was coming. Melrose was thinking this whole plan just was going to be just a nice evening with her roomie and this new guy Lyra had met. No Tobias and his pretty face. But how silly to think he wouldn't come , I mean he and Lyra were the best of pals.
Okay, just keep it together Melrose. Doing so has got you this far.
Both Melrose and Tobias made their way inside, neither one saying anything except a "hello" when they spotted one another in the parking lot. Recently Melrose had heard Tobias had been on a "Kissing Spree" kissing not only girls but guys. It kind of gave the message that he didn't think anything special of Melrose. So basically looking away from his pretty face was the best possible thing to do. She needed to get over him, it was only going to break her heart if she kept hanging her hopes out on him.
But wait now. Hold up. She didn't even want anything to do with him in the first place, right? GEEZ.
Melrose spotted Lyra and her friend bowling it up in Lane 53. "Hey! Roomie!" Melrose greeted sweetly with a wave, shutting out that obnoxious conscience of hers droning on about "Tobias this" or "Tobias that." If it got any louder in her head Melrose could swear Tobias himself was going to start hearing it.

"Melrose! TK!" Lyra greeted Melrose with a wave. She stood up from her seat and grinned. Just like Melrose, Lyra heard... well, she heard it from TK's mouth about the kiss. Disappointing? Yes. Why was Tobias even close to girls who were drinking anyways? And why was he hanging around wrestling with a boy who kissed boys? Lyra's mind shook the thought off. "We paid for you two already," Lyra said, "they wouldn't give us the lane if we didn't pay," she said. "I'm glad you both could make it!"

Tobias had spotted Melrose in the parking lot and happily gone over to see her, but she seemed completely uninterested in him. He sighed as he followed behind her sullenly. Lyra had asked him to come bowling, but now it seemed like it would be an awkward night.
Stupid Lyra Tobias thought to himself. He was shaken out of his thinking when he bumped into someone at the alley. "Sorry!" he apologized quickly before moving to catch up to Melrose.
"Hey Lyra," Tobias greeted his friend with a forced smile and wave. She has a guy with her. This feels like a double date. This keeps getting better Tobias thought, cursing himself inwardly.
He wished he had dressed better. A long-sleeve white shirt with a black t-shirt layered over it covered his top-half. As always, he wore a pair of jeans on bottom.

"Geez. Thanks Lyra! Here, I can pay you back." Melrose grabbed for her yellow bag around her shoulder and accidently nudging Tobias in the chest.
"Oh, I'm sorry." And there it was. Him. Tobias. His eyes. She hadn't really noticed his eyes before. Oh my g-
"How much?" Melrose snapped out of it like lightning. Enough of that. He's not interested.
And then there came a sort of odd feeling. I mean, there were two girls, two guys, right? Was Lyra setting this up purposely? Maybe this new guy was like an interest of hers. I mean, he definitely was attractive, Melrose could see why Lyra would like him. And then there was Tobias, and Melrose had mentioned her little infatuation with him to Lyra.... But that's silly. Dream-like, really. Geez.

Tobias saw a chance to play the gentleman. "Oh, don't worry about Melrose. I'll pay Lyra back for the both of us," he hastily told her. He reached into his pocket, pulled his wallet out, and retrieved a few bills. He pulled Lyra close and handed her the money, but not before he hissed, "Is this some sort of set up?"
He pulled away and smiled at Melrose, hoping that she didn't think that his behavior was strange. Tobias walked to the front desk to get a pair of bowling shoes and came back. He sat down in a chair to put on the shoes.

"Five dollars," Lyra replied. Lyra was impressed with the prices of bowling here. Back at home bowling was a lot pricier, but cheaper entertainment than most places. Lyra looked around. Two guys, two girls. Lyra's palm hit her face, why did she do this? Crap. It was completely unintentional, to make it look like a double date. But who knew? Maybe it was Mel and Ethan, Lyra and TK, or TK and Mel, Lyra Ethan, or since, you know- Lyra would joke about this with Tobias for years on, TK and Eth- no, that's just... no.
Tobias spoke into her ear and Lyra furrowed her brows, whispering back- quickly, of course, "yes, TK. It's my way of having us go on a date, something I so desire," she said sarcastically and her lips slanted.
Lyra went over to the computer and inputed Mel's and TK's name. She didn't care who was who, the names she put were Black Jack and Cribbage. Nothing too exiting. Lyra looked back at the group, trying not to make this completely awkward. "Anybody hungry?" Lyra asked. Bowling alley french fries were the best and she could use some, even some cherry coke.

"Geez. Really, Tobias? Thanks, really. You're too sweet." His eyes. Holy mother of-
Hey. Quit it. What are you doing? Just go get you're bowling shoes.
Melrose smiled as Tobias paid and hurried off to get her own shoes as well. Oh! What was he doing? Paying? What does it mean? What does it not mean? What a gentleman. Geez. And his eyes.
OH quit it with the eyes. Try not to look like a total crazy tonight. He's not interested. Melrose repeated it over and over in her head.
She took her seat and tied the shoes lace as tight as she could, as if almost punishing herself for letting Tobias get to her so early on in the game.
Melrose was actually pretty talented at bowling, come to mention it. When you need a PE credit in regular high school, and any other sport you would be overqualified in speed for, what do you do? Bowling team, that's what.

Tobias shook his head at Lyra's suggestion of food. He was busy thinking about Mel. She's really cute... I wonder if she likes me... No way..he thought to himself.
Tobias finished tying his shoes and went to find a suitable ball. He found a nice blue one that would work for him and brought it back to the group's lane. He set it in the machine. "Okay, no one laugh at my poor bowling skills," Tobias announced.
